Joseph Bruno Stadium

Joseph Bruno Stadium located in Troy, New York was a pleasant surprise!  The “Joe’ as it is known to the locales is located on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College and is one of the finest short-season stadiums in Minor League baseball.  The Houston Astros affiliate has drawn an average of over 4,000 fans per game this season, which is roughly 90% of their capacity.  Between a winning team, their fine stadium, and fun promotions, it is no surprise that they are packing them in for their 38 home game season.

On this night, the Tri-City ValleyCats were taking on the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the Orioles short season affiliate from Maryland.  Only this night, the Tri-City ValleyCats were renamed the Tri-City Smellycats as part of a promotion for the hit television show “Friends.” The organization went all out to make this a fun night with the players wearing special “Friends” themed jerseys along with many “Friends” themed events and references throughout the evening.  To top it all off, the club even offered a few special menu items for those willing to try something different.  On the menu was Ross Gellers’ famous Moist-maker sandwich, which consisted of turkey, gravy and a nice cranberry dressing. Those willing to try something a bit different, could sample Rachel Greens’ Thanksgiving Trifle, which consisted of meat, peas, jam, custard, and other assorted delights.

The atmosphere at the Joe was wonderful.  The stadium was at or near capacity, and even though it was a chilley late summer evening, the crowd was into the game from start to finish.  A nice sunset just added to the wonderful evening.

So if you are ever in the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady and Troy), make sure to add a ValleyCats game to your plans.  It is worth the stop!
